How to grant Fabric Admin permission?

Introduction

When working with Microsoft Fabric, one of the most common blockers you’ll encounter is permission-related. Some tasks—like removing orphaned deployment pipelines—require Fabric Admin privileges. Surprisingly, it’s not always obvious how to grant this role, since it isn’t managed directly inside Fabric, but rather through Azure Entra ID roles; this article will walk you through the exact steps to grant Fabric Administrator permission to a user.

Setting the Stage

Microsoft Fabric uses the Microsoft 365 Admin framework for permissions. That means you won’t find a “Fabric Admin” button inside the Fabric portal. Instead, this role is assigned at the tenant level, alongside other Microsoft 365 roles.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you (or someone else supporting you) have Global Admin or Privileged Role Admin rights in your Azure Entra ID tenant.

Solution

Step 1. Navigate to https://admin.microsoft.com and sign in with your global admin account 1️⃣, In the left-hand menu, select Users > Active Users 2️⃣ and click on the user you want to grant permissions to 3️⃣

Step 2. In the user details panel, go to Roles and click Manage roles,

Step 3. Expand the Show all by category option, scroll down to Collaboration category 1️⃣ and check Fabric Administrator 2️⃣ and Save Changes 3️⃣

⏱️ Propagation time: It may take a few minutes before the role becomes effective.

Conclusion

Granting Fabric Admin permissions isn’t done inside Fabric itself—it’s managed through Entra ID roles in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Once granted, the user will have full Fabric administrative privileges, including the ability to manage deployment pipelines, capacities, and governance features.

Call to Action

If you’ve been stuck on tasks that require Fabric Admin rights, now you know how to unlock them. Try it out in your own tenant and see how the permissions open new management options in Fabric.
